We love what we do — even when faced with the most difficult of challenges. This doesn’t drain our passion; it drives it. So, why do those same things sometimes have the opposite effect? Why do those things sometimes cause people to consider a career change? Are the people who love what they do simply lucky that they found their calling, or is it because they also work at loving their work? We’ve discovered three things that can not only help you love your work, but can also take your passion for it to a new level. Change your mindset. No matter how much we love what we do, there are days when even the most minor things seem to be a challenge. Instead of being consumed by negativity, people who love what they do will shift their focus to the action they need to take to turn the day around. This infographic from Adecco has some helpful tips. Prioritize your projects. When a person loves what they do, work ethic is rarely an issue. However, challenges arise when enthusiasm for multiple tasks leads to little direction and few results. Getting your priorities straight will focus your passion and increase your productivity. This article from Inc. will give you more insight to the traits of people who are passionate about their work. Engage in laughter. We all know that “laughter is the best medicine,” but it’s helpful to apply that advice to the workplace. In fact, a recent Gallup poll found that people who laugh and smile at work are more engaged in their jobs, and that makes for a healthy and vibrant environment in all aspects. For more tips on loving your job, read this article from Forbes. Do you have best practices or experiences you’d like to share with the WFF community? Loving What you Do 5 Tips for Goal-Setting in 2017 January 9, 2017January 9, 2017 wffhqLeave a comment With the new year in full swing, many of us are excited about fresh starts, bold challenges, and ways to improve both personally and professionally. This all begins with setting goals, and there’s no better time to start than right now. So, where do you begin? Here are five tips for not only setting your 2017 goals, but for achieving them. Put your goals in writing. The physical act of writing your goals makes them real and makes achieving them tangible. If your goals only exist in your mind or in a conversation over lunch, that’s likely where they will stay. To dig deeper on why writing down your goals increases the odds of them being achieved, check out this article. Write in active voice. Instead of writing your goals as if they will happen, write them as if they’re happening now, as if they are a fact rather than a hope. For example, “I will spend more time with my family” is not nearly as empowering as “I spend meaningful time with my family.” It’s a simple change in form, but a powerful one for your mindset. Be specific. When it comes to achieving your goals—and that’s what setting goals is all about—being specific is key. A vague goal such as “increase sales” leaves too little direction and motivation to achieve it. On the other hand, adding specificity to a general goal brings it to life for you and for those around you. “Increase same-store sales by 8% in Q1 and Q2” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Make an action plan. Achieving goals often requires many steps along the way and, once your goals have been set, it’s time to start charting a road map. For instance, if taking your team on a retreat is one of your goals, think of all the things that must happen before reaching your destination—schedules must be coordinated, accommodations booked and agendas created, among other things. Establish those steps and milestones now to stay on track. Get some tools to help you. Use technology—and office supplies—to help with your goal setting. This Business.com article provides you with the “11 Best Tools for Setting and Tracking Goals.” Besides, we could all use more giant Post-it notes in our lives. And if you know leadership development will be a focus of one of your 2017 goals, now would be a great time to add “register for the WFF Annual Leadership Development Conference” to your action plan! 5 Tips for Goal-Setting in 2017 Industry Tales – Working in the Service Industry During the Holidays December 20, 2016December 20, 2016 wffhqLeave a comment The holidays are full of memories and stories; some of them make you smile and others make you cry, some of them become a cherished keepsake while others provide a life lesson. The following story does all those things, and it comes to us from a familiar place — the anonymous recollections of a former restaurant server. If there’s one universal truth in the hospitality industry, it’s that we work while others play. Being someone who first started serving tables through high school, college and beyond, this was all I knew, and the holiday season only magnified that. Although you may have heard of “holiday hazards” in the industry, I am here to tell you an uplifting tale of holidays in the service industry. This is one of those stories that will spread cheer and give you a new perspective of the sometimes thankless efforts from our hardworking baristas, servers, cooks and bartenders. This time of year our calendars fill up and stress can peak. There is no better feeling than taking a break from your busy day in a cafe or restaurant, but what happens when everyone else’s break space is your workplace? Personally, I would thrive when I could chat with a customer about their busy schedule as I made them the best cup of coffee or a refreshing cocktail to help them through their day. This particular story I would like to share exemplifies just that. It was ...
